Must be by the bookA collaborative project with Sebastian Larsson.
Behind the facade of humanitarianism and neutrality, one of the world’s largest arms industries thrives. Combining experimental book design with activist research, this publication investigates the paradox of Swedish arms manfacture and export.&nbsp;
The cover is screen printed with thermochromic ink, which fades by the warmth of human touch. With this book we seek to emphasise the human elements of an often depoliticised issue.
This publication is part of the book art project Bibliotek Nordica, which will be exhibited in San Francisco in 2019.&nbsp;Read more about it&nbsp;here.

Within These Bounds

Containing
five different weights of paper in various sizes, this publication is an
archive of images obtained from the nostalgic reminiscence of my childhood in
the northern parts of Sweden, inevitably altered by the human imperfection of
recollection. The size and weight of each signature enacts a translation
of my individual experience of each memory. In addition to this, the pages are
infused with the smell of pine — a prominent and sentimental element of my
past.

	To further emphasize the ambiguities of remembrance, the images are
second prints pulled from handcarved original woodblocks, called ghosts. The ghost is a much lighter reprint
with substantial variations from the first print, and could be described as a
transparent mirage of the first image, implying that there will always be a
difference between what is experienced and what is remembered.
The text inside the folder is printed with thermochromatic ink which
will fade and disappear with the warmth of your breath. This elucidates once more the fragility of
memory, and that nothing lasts forever.

They Are Coming —Josephine D. Heard

<img width="4033" height="2950" width_o="4033" height_o="2950" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/da09a162ee01bf21a735a94f7a40b222403b9ec0d606e747fcf086bef1b74ba5/180608_0158.jpg" data-mid="26808124" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/da09a162ee01bf21a735a94f7a40b222403b9ec0d606e747fcf086bef1b74ba5/180608_0158.jpg" />

First published in 1890, this poem
deals with black liberation from slavery and oppression in late-19th century
USA.&nbsp;Here, I have interpreted the text by designing a book consisting only
of empty, white pages, with the poem printed on ten black bookmarks. By placing
the written content on the physically separated bookmarks, these are given a
new value and function, and represent black resistance and liberation from the
white context. As a metaphor for human history, this illustrates how resistance
always takes place within a dominant structure, here represented by the book
and its white pages. The weight and width of the 800-page book increases the
oppressive force of the white pages onto the content. &nbsp;

The poem has a distinctive build-up, as the words »They are coming« are
followed first by »Slowly«, then by »Proudly«, and lastly by »Boldly«. This
intensification is reflected by the progression of the embossed front and back
cover, as the third and final line is printed with such a pressure that the
paper cracks around the letters, mediating a sense of frustration and struggle.
Heard’s name is printed in black on the book spine, both in order to link her
to the bookmarks, and to offer her the space and recognition she
deserves.

The Yellow Wall-Paper — Charlotte Perkins Gilman

<img width="3975" height="2908" width_o="3975" height_o="2908" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ab8a0bb07108efb856df67eed937890980d790224befb1d1a34946ac4a9f96da/180608_0140_2.jpg" data-mid="25563408" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ab8a0bb07108efb856df67eed937890980d790224befb1d1a34946ac4a9f96da/180608_0140_2.jpg" />

	In this
short story, the reader gets to follow a woman undergoing a nervous breakdown.
Her husband, a doctor, says that the main reason for her mental
instability is her writing. She should stay at home and sit isolated in her
room in order to get well, he ordinates. The story is told through her secret
diary where she writes down her thoughts and feelings while isolated. The
reader can note how her obsession with the yellow wallpaper inside the room
grows stronger and stronger. This story is considered to be one of the central
early works in American feminist literature as it described the attitudes
during the 19th century towards women’s mental health.

I have interpreted its message, first, by making the book pages into a gradient
scale from white to yellow, offering to the reader the same feeling of gradual
breakdown as experienced by the main character. The book’s typesetting also
develops in line with the unfolding of the narrative in how the text grows
wider and larger. I want to enhance a feeling of claustrophobia in the book
form, just as in how the woman wants to — but cannot — break free from the
small and constrained space of the room, here represented by the page itself.
The book is designed with a Japanese folding, which means that the book pages
contain a hidden space between them. In the story, the main character describes
how she sees the shape of a woman behind the yellow wallpaper. The pages of the
book hide other examples of women who have, throughout history, been similarly
abused, silenced, overlooked or ignored.
