Must be by the bookA collaborative project with Sebastian Larsson.
Behind the facade of humanitarianism and neutrality, one of the world’s largest arms industries thrives. Combining experimental book design with activist research, this publication investigates the paradox of Swedish arms manfacture and export.
The cover is screen printed with thermochromic ink, which fades by the warmth of human touch. With this book we seek to emphasise the human elements of an often depoliticised issue.
This publication is part of the book art project Bibliotek Nordica, which will be exhibited in San Francisco in 2019. Read more about it here.

Värdet av konst
Book design for Värdet av konst (The Value of Art – For the Brain, Society and Life) written by Karolina and Erik Modig, published by Arvinius + Orfeus.Bringing together research and interviews, the book explores the many ways art affects our brains, our lives and society. For the cover, we worked with the playful typeface Parabole. Its shifting forms hint at different perspectives and dimensions, while details in gold foil play with the idea of value.Inside, a clear editorial structure is combined with a freer use of images, quotes and text boxes, creating rhythm and variation throughout the book.

Where Each Stitch Breathes / Juohke sákkaldat vuoigŋá / Där varje stygn andas
Book design for the exhibition catalogue for Britta Marakatt-Labba – Where Each Stitch Breathes, showing at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The publication accompanies the exhibition and presents a wide selection of Marakatt-Labba’s work, including embroidery, graphic art, installations and sculpture.Inspired by her embroidered practice, we chose the stencil typeface PP Valve Stencil for the headlines, subtly reflecting the structure of the stitch. Body text is set in MM Tid, Moderna Museet’s custom typeface. The horizontal format allows the works to be shown as large as possible, often extending across full spreads to bring the viewer closer to the intricate details of the embroidery. Texts in Swedish, Northern Sámi and English alternate with image spreads, creating rhythm and balance throughout the book. The interior is printed on Munken Lynx Rough, an uncoated, high-bulk paper that emphasizes the material qualities of the textile works. The cover image is printed directly on cloth, and the book is bound with visible red thread stitching.

Maria Mitchell was the first female astronomer
in the United States, and in 1847, she became the first person to discover a
comet via telescope. During her lifetime, Mitchell fought for women’s right to
an education, and promoted a more creative and zestful approach to science and
learning. This text consists of Mitchell’s letters and diary entries (compiled
by her sister), providing insights into her everyday life as a professional
astronomer, and showing how her lifestyle deviated significantly from the
stereotypical gender roles during the 19th century.
Poetry was an important aspect of Mitchell’s life and
upbringing, and she argued that it should also form a central part of research.
She talks about a specific poem that has followed
her throughout life, namely The Spacious Firnament on High by Joseph Addinson.
I chose to print an excerpt of this poem on the edges of the book’s pages, so
that it runs through the book just as it followed Mitchell through her career.
Furthermore, I chose to cut the fore-edge in steps so that the poem is the
first visible detail to reach the reader when the book cover is opened. This
contributes to a moment of surprise, something unexpected, as I wanted the book
to transmit a sense of new discoveries.
A notion of curiosity is also brought along in the form of the book cover. The
black book jacket conceals the book’s inner gold-glitter cloth cover, referring
to the vast, endless, unexplored night sky.

Within These Bounds

Containing
five different weights of paper in various sizes, this publication is an
archive of images obtained from the nostalgic reminiscence of my childhood in
the northern parts of Sweden, inevitably altered by the human imperfection of
recollection. The size and weight of each signature enacts a translation
of my individual experience of each memory. In addition to this, the pages are
infused with the smell of pine — a prominent and sentimental element of my
past.

To further emphasize the ambiguities of remembrance, the images are
second prints pulled from handcarved original woodblocks, called ghosts. The ghost is a much lighter reprint
with substantial variations from the first print, and could be described as a
transparent mirage of the first image, implying that there will always be a
difference between what is experienced and what is remembered.
The text inside the folder is printed with thermochromatic ink which
will fade and disappear with the warmth of your breath. This elucidates once more the fragility of
memory, and that nothing lasts forever.
